Construction of two prisons with the capacity of accommodating up to 10,000 people is afoot.
A central prison with the capacity of accommodating 7,000 inmates is to be constructed in Nuwakot and a regional structure that can house 3,000 convicts will be established in Banke, according to Himnath Dawadi, Director General of Prison Management Department.
Land acquisition (535 ropani in Nuwakot and 10 biga in Banke) for this purpose has already been complete. It may be noted that last year’s ‘Gorkha’ earthquake inflicted damages on prisons in over 30 districts across the country, causing additional problems in the accommodation of inmates.
The Department has already called for a tender for the construction of new structures and has a target of bringing them within the next five years. RSS
