Bonded tillers, herders demonstrate in Satpari on May Day

Bonded tillers and cattle herders (locally known as Haruwa/Charuwa) staged demonstrations in Rajbiraj, the district headquarters of Saptari Sunday, demanding an end to the practice of this traditional system of forced labour.

The demonstrations were held in coincidence of the International Workers’ Day.
A rally that originated from the local Shiva Temple converged into a corner meeting upon reaching the Darshan Chowk of the town after passing through its different parts. The participants of the rally carried placards that read like, “abolish the Haruwa Charuwa system, form the Haruwa Charuwa rehabilitation commission, and stop to exploit the children of Haruwa Chaurwa labour”.
They have demanded that the state should bear the education cost of their children up to the bachelor level.
The data shows that there are 18,361 forced tillers and cattle herders alone in Saptari, a district of the eastern Terai. RSS
